2014 Season Review San Francisco 49ers

After a disappointing 7-9 2013 season the San Francisco 49ers had a good off-season acquiring players to try and rebound for a playoff run in 2014, unfortunately the run would come up short. The biggest reason for the team's failure to reach the postseason in 2014 = not able to finish games. The team suffered heart breaking defeats to several teams including: 45-41 loss to Arizona, 33-31 loss to Cincinnati, 38-35 loss to Carolina, 27-25 & 24-20 losses to an undefeated Seattle squad. The toughest loss of the season was the 39-38 loss to the Cleveland Browns. "It was a game we should have won, however we could have won a number of games that we just let slip through our fingers," stated coach Harbaugh, "It's definitely something this team needs to work on for next season closing out games and dropping the hammer on teams, if not I will be looking for a new job." Offensively this team had a good season, the 49ers were 10th in points scored averaging 32.3 pts per game. QB Colin Kaepernick signed a contract extension and finished the season with quality numbers 177/283 3493 yards 27 TDs 18 INTs 112.3 Rating. Pro-Bowl WR Cecil Shorts III who was acquired early in season as part of the Aldon Smith trade, had an outstanding season becoming Kaepernick's favorite target with 54 receptions for 1,203 yards 22.3 AVG and 13 TDs. However, the team's best part of their offense was the running game it ranked 8th with 151.9 yards per game. This running game was led by Pro-Bowl HB LaMichael James who had a breakout season with 291 carries 1,850 yards and 20 TDs. James also was a valuable member of the passing attack with 20 receptions 475 yards and 4 TDs. Defensively the 49ers were led by their captain MLB Patrick Willis who led the defense with 89 tackles. FS Eric Reid followed up his defensive rookie of the year season with a solid 69 tackles and 2 FFs. LOLB Ahmad Brooks made the Pro-Bowl with 48 tackles 12 sacks 2 FFs and 1 INT. Although this team failed in its goal of making the playoffs in 2014 there is a sense of optimism heading into the off-season the team has 10 draft picks in the upcoming draft including 2 1st rd picks and 3 2nd rd picks. If the team can find a few good players in the draft and learn to finish games things could be looking very good for the prospect of making the playoffs in 2015 if not could be another lackluster year in SF.
