Well sports fans the season has started. While it's only entering Week 4 at this time some teams dreams are growing, while others are starting to look more like a nightmare that may not end for many seasons.
Power Rankings
1) Browns - Only giving up 9 points a game on defense that currently ranks #3. Their offense is not breaking records, but they don't have to for them to win. They will take what you give underneath, until you give a good shot for a deep ball. They play solid ball on both sides of the field in the turnover game. They have a great chance to walk away with the Championship this year.
2) Jags - The Browns defense is very impressive, but even they are taking a back seat role in having the #1 rated defense so far this season. This unit has only allowed 5.3 pts a game! That really makes it much easier for an offense to get the job done. While they may not have the greatest players on offense or defense this coach has found a way to punish teams on the gridiron. Not much scouting on this coach, but the stats say... it's not gonna be a good day for your team.
3) Falcons - No this is not a mistake or some elaborate scheme to make him self destruct. The Dirty Birds have been balling on defense with the #2 rated unit. They have been taking care of the ball on offense and putting enough points on the board to reward their defense for shutting teams down. They have a deep ball threat in JJ and Matty Ice is not melting right now. If they continue to play lockdown defense with a game manager type offense then this team could go far in the playoffs. If they get sloppy on offense with turnovers this team could fall quickly and risk a playoff spot!
4) Cards - Our friend from over the pond has his team playing at a very high level. Their #1 rated offense is keeping some D-Cord's up late the night before the game. His defense is not in the Top 5, but they are no pushovers by any means. The running game combo of the Johnson Brothers is the driving force behind this offense. Carson Palmer has not been sharp and this has allowed Drew Stanton to earn some playing time. They have 4 rushing TD's and only 3 passing TD's. But wait... Where is the number one rated offense coming from? The defense has helped elevate this offense by providing TO's and field position. The defense has 11 sacks, 4 FF, 6 INTs, and 1 TD. They are often winded as their offense gets it done quickly with the good field position, otherwise their numbers would be much higher for the defense. If you force things on the wrong side of the field, you will not beat this team on most Sunday's.
5) Rams - This team has a coach that can get them in the AFC playoffs most years. The good news is that he is now in the NFC and life is much easier for his stress levels. Their defense is in the Top 5 and has plenty of talent and should end up being a Top 10 defense for sure at the end of the year. Their offense does enough damage to put their defense in the running to close out games. They have done this up to this point. They have not lost, but they do have a tie to the Steelers. If their running game gets going over the course of the season, they should make some waves in the playoffs.
6) Raiders - They have a coach that likes the deep ball and fast players. Al Davis (RIP) would be proud to see this new coach for his beloved Raiders. This offseason they went hunting for any player that could sack the QB vs. even the best of OL's, but he may have only needed his 5th or 6th chance to prove he's not a fool. Well they found their man in Aldon Smith one of the games best rushing LB's or DE's in some formations. He will be paired with a very promising young LB K. Mack. Add in some other talents around them on defense and you have what looks to be a Top 10 defense. They are getting it done right now as a Top 5 defense, but Smith is one beer away from running over 5-10 people in the Oakland area. The offense has a good running game that setups up playaction on deeper routes. Take away the running game and this coach will play chess and normally find his checkmate. Also be warned he is a dirty coach that loves to coming flying in aiming for knees to any of your players on the sideline.
7) Giants - This coach loves to throw INT's to Lethal during all preseason games. But seems to play much better during the season. They have been playing lights out on defense and JPP 3 finger discount has not slowed them down. Their offense is playing it safe for the most part and just trying not to give away the games. This should prove to be a good plan for an NFC team.
Fins - They have a new coach. Sure the Mayor, local business leaders, and of course the Fans wish they had Lethal back in town. That cannot happen this year and their new coach is trying hard to make a positive impact. That is starting to take effect as they lead the AFC East. They just won a big division game over the Bills and that could help get this team going. Their defense has plenty of talent on the DL and they do make the LB's look better as well as the CB's. But if you can focus opposite of Grimes & Jones then you have a chance to move the ball in the air. Their offense is only going to get better each week. They have depth at RB and WR's. Add in the new TE that can take over a game vs LBs and you have an offense that should be a Top 10 by the end of the season.
9) Lions - The offense has one of the Best WRs to ever lace up his shoes. This opens up the offense in ways that most teams will never know. When you try to focus on Calvin the rest of the squad will make you pay with the big play! Their defense is missing the DT's from last year and it's never easy to replace a player like Suh. But this coach still has his crew in top form and should end up with a Top 10 defense backed by a high powered offense for a deep playoff run.
10) Colts - Luck started out shaky early throwing more passes to defenders than to his own team. Now he is starting to settle down and the defense is helping him out by playing like a team on a mission. VD leads the secondary and can shadow most any WR in the league. This does not mean they will play lights out week in / out. It just means they can make you pay for trying to force things early as Luck gets lucky scoring enough points to put on the pressure. This is a team that you want to have long drives on and that will put the pressure back on Luck to make quick work on limited time. Otherwise Luck will burn you late in the games with an amazing late TD drive or VD will pick off your #1 in the redzone.
...
Good luck to all teams and may you be lucky enough to dodge OV on the sidelines during your games!
