Name: Zebadee Boyd
Position: SS
College: Tennessee
Pick: 1st Round 28th Overall 2015 draft
At the end of the 2014 season, the Steelers traded whom many thought was the future heir apparent, Shamarko Thomas, to the Redskins in the package deal that brought Robert Griffin III to Pittsburgh. Troy Polamalu was coming off a very solid 2014 season, and the Steelers were looking to the draft for the future SS of the team. They did not plan on finding a player like Zebadee Boyd.
Coming out of Tennessee the Steelers had Boyd rated #1 on their SS board. Knowing that they trading down from 15 to 28, they did not believe there was a shot that Boyd would fall to them, and were planning on drafting another player or position when it came to be their pick.
Lone behold, Boyd starts falling down the draft, the Steelers thought about trading up, but held fast, hoping he would fall. The Steelers drafted Boyd, hoping he would be able to take the reigns from Polamalu in a year. Needless to say, they were surprised as anyone when Boyd came in first day of training camp, and wrestled the starting job away from Polamalu, who was cut at the begining of the 2016 season.
Boyd won Defensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2015, and many in Pittsburgh believe him to be an All-Pro snub in 2016. Boyd has taken over as the face of the franchises difference, and Coach G Waffle couldn't be happier with this kid.
